Following this family genealogy for over 10 years has brought us to the gravesite of Benjamin T. Woodmansee. He was the son of Bradley B. Woodmansee (1813 - 1897) and Sylphina Maria Sheldon (1817 - 1902). This family resided in LaGrange, Lorain County, Ohio, having migrated with the Sheldon family by covered wagon from Delaware County, New York in the mid-1840's.

It was a brief newspaper article in the Elyria Republican (Lorain County, Ohio) that led us to Benjamin's grave. The 1893 front-page paragraph mentioned that family members were called by telegram to Gratiot County, Michigan due to Benjamin's critical condition. A visit to the Gratiot County courthouse in Ithaca, Michigan confirmed a record of death (Consumption). A cemetery transcription and map by the Elsie (Clinton County, MI) Historical Society led us to the gravesite.

While the Sheldon Family Association records indicated a last name of "Woodman" for Sylphina's spouse, it was a LaGrange Twp. Cemetery transcription for Benjamin's sister Polly Woodmansee that brought light to a correction. The transcription also noted "Dau BB & SM" and the exact initials of her parents then led to further verification through census records, newspaper articles of the day, and other vital records from the county. While Polly died in her teenage years, their only other sibling David F. Woodmansee married Ida Knapp, but had no children.

On 26 June 1864, Benjamin married "Jane De Luce" according to an online source, however she was actually Elizabeth Jane Luce (1845 - 1920) who was originally from Medina County, Ohio. Some records are not clear, and they have not been located in the 1880 US Feceral Census, either in Michigan or Ohio.

Together they gave birth to approximately 10 children, who were: Lillian, Lula, Charles, Frank, Kittie, Jennie, Pearl, Earl, Lona, and Arthur. They were identified by a combination of US Census records, Family Bible (viewed in 2006 whie visiting Ohio), and other marriage and vital records of Lorain County, Ohio.

While the exact reason that Benjamin T. Woodmansee was in Gratiot County, Michigan, in 1893 is not clear, it is possible that he worked for his uncle David F. Sheldon, who moved our family to Michigan sometime in the 1850's. In partnership with two other men, surnames Raney and Leach, David F. Sheldon owned mills in Clinton and Gratiot Counties, and later on his own in Eaton County. It is also possible that he was employed in farming as North Star is a small community with vast farmlands in the area.

Another plausable possibility that Benjamin moved to Gratiot County, Michigan, is because his uncle George and Anna (Cole) Woodmansee also lived near the St. Louis, Gratiot County, area later in their lives, although the exact time period is not known.

After Benjamin's death, his wife Elizabeth "Jane" moved back to LaGrange, Ohio, and she married her deceased sister's (Polly Luce) husband, Egbert Hastings. They were married 09 April 1900 in LaGrange. The three share one headstone, and are interred in the LaGrange Twp. Cemtery, Lorain County, Ohio.

Descending surnames include Johnson, Bassett, Brouse, Moore, and Sleeman, among others.

Thank you to Glenn Geirland for transferring this memorial to me in July 2010.
