Maria Izzo was born in 1876 in Petrulo, Italy -- one of three villages that comprise Calvi Risorta -- the daughter of Andrea Battista Izzo and Rosa Migliozzi. She was one of nine Izzo children, four of whom died in Calvi Risorta before reaching adulthood. Maria's surviving sisters -- Angela (Mandara), Onesta (Lama), Nicolina (Savastano) and Theresa (Ciricola) -- all immigrated to the United States.
Maria married Raffaele DeMatteo in 1895 in Calvi Risorta. She arrived in America in 1904 with two of her four children -- Theresa (Marrapese) and Rose (Narducci) -- to rejoin her husband, who had left Italy two years earlier to find work. The couple's other two children -- Angeline (Giannini) and John -- rejoined the family in Cleveland in 1907. Maria and Raffaele had eight more children, all born in Cleveland: Mary (Colucci), Anthony, Ralph, Helen (Isabella), Blanche (Rossi), Roger, Arthur and Gerald. Maria Raffaela DeMatteo died on June 29, 1940, from complications caused by diabetes.
