Interment will be in the Castlewood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, January 2nd at the church. A prayer service will begin at 6 p.m. and the public is invited.
Pallbearers will be Jida’s eight maternal grandchildren: Michelle Farrington, Tammi Chaney, Jerry, Bruce, Bill, Dana, Jay and Todd Salonen.
Jida Johanna Saathoff was born on February 18, 1921 in Deuel County, South Dakota to Rudolph and Anje (Heemeyer) Saathoff. She grew up in the Castlewood area, attended country grade school and graduated from Castlewood High School in 1938. Jida was married to Willard Salonen and they made their home in the Castlewood area until Willard’s death in 1970. She later married Eudell Aaberg and they made their home in the Astoria area for many years. Jida was a homemaker and also a Stanley Home Products dealer from 1956 until 2014.
She was a member of Senior Citizens, American Legion Auxiliary, Bethel Choir, American Lutheran Choir, Bethel Church Council, Merry Mrs. Club, and Astoria Activity Club.
Jida enjoyed crocheting, making afghans, and making quilts for graduates, babies and other family and friends.
Jida is survived by her children, Carol (Ken) Williams of Seattle, WA, Darrel (Jean) Salonen of Ft. Pierre, SD, Duane (Laurel) Salonen of Omaha, NE, and Dale (Suzie) Salonen of Danville, IL; her step-children, Bonnie (Harvey) Gilbertson of Detroit Lakes, MN, Bryce (Fay) Aaberg of Edinburg, TX, Lujeanne Kjelden of Hendricks, MN, Susan (Dan) Burczek of Buckeye, AZ, Myron Aaberg of Westminster, CO, and Kimberly (Carl Huth) Peterson of Canby, MN; her sister, Johanna Schull of Watertown, SD; eight grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; twenty three great-grandchildren; seventeen step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; daughter, Ruth Ann Salonen; and daughters-in-law, Verna and Jill Salonen.
The family suggests memorials in Jida’s memory be made to the American Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, care of the church at 311 S. 4th Ave, Castlewood, SD 57223.
