Loyd Glenn Cates, age 61, of Tumbling Shoals, Arkansas, passed away Friday, April 8, 2005, at the Baptist Health Medical Center in Heber Springs. He was born in Drasco, Arkansas, on March 20, 1944. Mr. Cates was a lifetime resident of Cleburne County. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served as a sergeant in the 1st Infantry Division. He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal, the Silver Star for gallantry in action, and Purple Heart. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, Lifetime member of the American Legion, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of Sugar Loaf Lodge #414. Above all, he was a devout Christian and a member of the Chastain Chapel General Baptist Church in Tumbling Shoals, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, John W. and Sarah Richardson Cates, one sister, Lillian Engleman, and one brother, Louis Cates. He is survived by his wife, Donna Kennedy Cates and one son, Scott Glenn Cates of Tumbling Shoals. He is also survived by three sisters, Lucy Reeves of Greers Ferry, AR, Alma Lancaster of Heber Springs, AR, and Violet Webb of Fairbanks, Alaska; and two brothers, Marvin Cates of Hopewell, AR, and Leon Cates of Hector, AR. Mr. Cates is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

Visitation will be held Monday, April 11, from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 12, at 2:00 P.M. in the Chastain Chapel Church with Pastor Eric Decker and Rev. Terry Mote officiating. Interment will be in the Chastain Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gary Lacy, Willie Stone, Ricky Logan, Larry Reed, Johnny Carr, and Wayne Reeves. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Bradford, Wade Bradford, O. B. Moss, Jake Kennedy, and Gerald Lacy. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.
