Billy Paul...A Local Legend Is Gone

Billy Frank "Paul" Hughes was born to Curtis and Hazel Hughes on November 26, 1949 in Tell, Texas in Childress County. He was the sixth of twelve children born to this union.

Billy is preceded in death by his father, Curtis Hughes Sr. Billy attended and graduated from J. J. Rhodes High School in Childress, Texas. In his youth, Billy united with Laster Chapel Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Elder L.C. Laster.

After leaving home, Billy moved to Dallas, Texas. In 1965, Billy received Jesus Christ as His Lord and Saviour at Baldwin Chapel in Dallas, Texas under the pastorate of Supt. J.B. Baldwin. In early 70's Billy relocated to Oklahoma City, OK.

Billy had an extreme passion for Music and people. Billy was a world-renowned recording artist and traveled the world singing and performing. His travel included places such as Japan and Indonesia among many others. He performed locally for over three decades.

Billy was born an entertainer and remained true to that calling throughout his life. He could always be found singing and/or playing his guitar even and though his ailments. He was vibrant, outgoing, and loved by all of his family, friends, and fans alike. He was truly an inspiration to all that knew him.

On January 5, 2007, Billy, 57, was called to be with the Lord. Billy leaves to cherish his memory one son, Billy Hughes Jr., of Grand Prairie, TX; one daughter, Tasha Johnson of Amarillo, TX; mother, Hazel Hughes of Childress, TX; eight sisters; Artra (Robert) Buckley (Dallas, TX), Erma (William Simms (Oklahoma City, OK), Rachael Horrice (Duncanville, TX), Florence Collins (Dallas, TX), Hazel Choyce (Lafayette, CO), and Christine (Roderick) Brown (Alanta, GA); three brothers; Curtis Hughes Jr. (Boulder, CO), Leonard Hughes (Arlington TX), Albert Hughes (Wichita Falls, TX); and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces (great, great), nephews (great, great), cousins and friends.

After a long illness with diabetes, on January 6, 2007, Billy was called to be with the Lord.

Rest peacefully Billy for the journey of love is long and does not end in death.
