Mr. Bowden had been a gas business 34 years, working first as a gas station attendant and manager when he was a teenager and later as a deliveryman for Carter Gas Co., a concern he purchased in 1962.
A native of Beaufort County, N.C., he was a former president, vice president, secretary and treasurer of Tidewater Gas Association and had also held offices with the state gas association.
He was a member of Lynnhaven Masonic Lodge 220, Khedive Temple of the Shrine, Norfolk Scottish Rite Bodies, and the Chesapeake Shrine Club. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Marta Sokol Bowden; three sons, William B. Bowden Jr., Johnny Bowden and Dan Bowden, all of Virginia Beach; and three sisters, Yvonne B. Hoffman of Chesapeake, Linda B. Watson of Virginia Beach and Annette B. Vinson of Moyock.
The funeral with Masonic rites will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Friday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, by the Rev. Lamar Sentell. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial park. Friends may join the family from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today in the funeral home.
