BURTON, SR., REVEREND HORACE EDWARD - was born on October 23, 1923, in Wilmington, DE, to Frederick Douglas Burton and Bessie Jane Stewart Burton. He entered into eternal rest peacefully in his sleep on August 20, 2005, at 4:30 a.m. in Takoma Park, MD, at the home of his beloved daughter, Clynthia Ianthie Burton Graham and her husband, Hakeem Graham, with many loved ones present for his passing. He entered into Holy Matrimony with Margaret Juanita Sammons Burton of Clayton, DE, on January 26, 1953. In addition to his wife, his surviving family includes: children, Margaret Collins and Marvin Collins, Clynthia Graham, BS and Hakeem Graham, Horace E. Burton, Jr., Esq., and Diana Burton, Tracee McSwain, Esq., and Harvey McSwain, Zina Thompkins, RN, and Elisha Thompkins; grandchildren, Rahmon Burton and Divya Burton, Damon Trueitt and Jarvis Dixon, and Armon Trueitt, Keisha L. Owens, Andrea R. Owens, Margaret Isolina Burton, Jordan McSwain, Brian Thompkins, Jade McSwain; great grandson, Denzel Owens; sister, Ruth Ann Burton of Wilmington, DE; sisters-in-law, Ernestine Holden, Theresa Johnson, Gloria Harrison and Edward Harrison, Clynthia Flanagan; nephews, Joseph Burton, Esq., David Burton, Stephen Burton; precious extended family members include Rev. Edward and Marion Smart, Michael and Tia Cade, Terry Robinson, Dr. Stanley and Sharon Hearst, Mrs. Sylvia Caines of Bermuda, Rev. Betty and Edward Woolridge of Bermuda, and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends that have remained steadfast throughout the years. His education began in the Wilmington public schools and thereafter, he attended Delaware State College in Dover. He received a Bachelor's Degree from Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, OH, graduating Summa Cum Laude. He completed Payne Theological Seminary in Wilberforce. He also completed course work at Tufts University, MA. He served as a First Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II, with tours of duty in Europe and Asia. He served as a Commissioner for the South Jersey Transportation Authority. He was a longtime member of the NAACP. He lovingly pastored and was an excellent shepherd at the following churches: Byrds' AME Church in Clayton, DE; Richard Allen AME Church in St. Georges, Bermuda; Bethel AME Church in Woodbury; St. Paul's AME Church in Cambridge, MA; Bethel AME Church in Springfield, MA; Monumental AME Church in Steelton, PA, St. James AME Church in Atlantic City, which was his last charge, at which he spent 20 years. He also served the church in the following capacities: a member of the District Ministers President serving for 12 years, a trustee in the AME Church in the New England Conference, Philadelphia, PA Conference and the New Jersey Conference, as Dean of the AME Church Ministers' Institute in Harrisburg, PA District, Springfield, MA District and Atlantic City District. He was also a beloved schoolteacher at an alternative school for adjudicated boys in Harrisburg. Homegoing services will be held in St. James AME Church, New York and Arctic Avenues, Atlantic City, on Saturday, August 27, 2005, at Noon. Viewing will be held 9 a.m. until Noon. Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE, on Monday, August 29, 2005, at 11 a.m. Arrangements entrusted to Greenidge Funeral Home, Atlantic City.
