PLUM CITY — Lester C. Martin, age 69, of Plum City died on January 6, 2007, at the Plum City Care Center, Plum City.

Lester was born on July 27, 1937, the son of Lester C. Sr. and Paula (Gfall) Martin. He was born, raised and lived most of his life in the Plum City community. He graduated from Plum City High School in 1955. He received a bachelor's degree in history and physical education from UW-La Crosse. He earned his master's degree in history from Winona State University. On September 13, 1958, he married Patricia Bauer at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Durand. Lester taught school for one year at La Crosse Aquinas. From 1961 to 1980, he taught at Durand High School. While teaching in Durand, he coached freshman football and varsity baseball for many years. In 1980, he retired from teaching and ran the family farm in rural Plum City. Lester enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and skiing. He and his friends enjoyed making maple syrup and running his small sawmill. He enjoyed spending time with his many friends and former students.

Lester is survived by his wife, Patricia; three daughters, Alison (Zane) Gray of Las Vegas, Nev., Betsey (Kent) Myhre of Woodbury, Minn., and Mary (Ben) Valencia of Mesa, Ariz.; three sons, Chris (Lori) and Mike, both of Plum City, and Joe of Pepin; eight grandchildren; his mother, Paula Kleinert of Plum City; one sister, Marilyn Hechler of Baytown, Texas; one brother, Jerry T. Martin of Plainview, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lester C. Martin Sr.; and his stepfather, William Kleinert.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 12, 2007, at St. John's Catholic Church in Plum City. Rev. Ambrose Blenker will officiate. Burial will be in the Free Home Cemetery, Plum City.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Durand, and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

We the family would like to thank all the neighbors, friends and family who through the years visited and helped Lester. Also, a very special thanks to the staff at the Plum City Care Center.
