Florence was married to John H. Mead, an early vice president for Southern California Edison (SCE), but she made national headlines in the early 1920's as a student at Stanford University.

Being on one of Stanford's student newspapers, The Pictorial, she wrote an article in November of 1920 titled "Where There is So Much Smoke," that highlighted smoking among female students. Causing a heavy concern over image, many national newspapers, including at least one women's group, demanded a retraction. She graduated Stanford in 1922.

Florence passed away in 1974 after suffering a second stroke, and was survived by her husband, two children and six grandchildren.
