SYLVIA BATISTA Sylvia Ruth Batista, 71, of Las Vegas, passed away Nov. 27, 2009. She was born Jan. 3, 1938, in Georgetown, (Vermilion County or Carrol County?), Illinois., to Esther Graham and Howard Luther Terrell, and was a 33-year resident of Nevada. She was raised in Chicago but moved to Northern California at the age of 17, where she graduated from San Mateo High School in 1956. Shortly thereafter, she met the love of her life, Gerald Batista, whom she married in 1957. They provided a loving home for their five children and shared many wonderful years together. Sylvia graduated from St. Francis Nursing School in 1959 and worked as a nurse at hospitals in California and Las Vegas for over 50 years. Her compassion for others and dedication to providing the best patient care possible made a difference in the lives of so many people, both patients and family, friends and colleagues. Sylvia was also an avid animal lover and loyal 49ers fan. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gerald "Jerry" Michael Batista; and mother, Esther Graham. Sylvia is survived by her four daughters, Kimberly Ruth, Laura Terese, Catherine Marie and Karen Ann; one son, Gerald Michael "Mike" Jr.; eight grandchildren, Tyler, Bryan, Laura, Christopher, Nino, Isaphong, Ithiphong and Anantaphong; one great-granddaughter, Cherish; sister, Linda Ryan and her husband, Gary; brother, James Graham and his wife, Linda; and many nieces and nephews. Celebration of life will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at 4701 Victoria Beach Way, Las Vegas, NV 89130. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Solari Hospice Kids Camp.
