Funeral services for William Wallace Steckel, who died Sunday night at McAuley hospital, will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the Campbell Funeral home with the Rev. Kenneth Willis of the Church of Christ in charge. Interment will be in Sunset cemetery.
Steckel was born near Rogue River, at that time Woodville, in Jackson county, Sept. 23, 1873 [1878 is correct]. He came to Coos county in 1888 in a covered wagon over the old Coos Bay Wagon road. He had made his home here since that time. In February, 1904, he married Sarah J. Corthell.
Active Civic Worker
Steckel was active in the Knights of Pythias lodge in Marshfield and organized the first Boy Scout troop in Coos county. He was active in Eastside civic affairs, serving as mayor and on the city council for many years. For more than 30 years he was a sawfiler, the last six years having been employed at the Evans plant. For the past two years he had made his home at Bay Park.
He is survived by the widow and the following children: Thelo W., Sumner; Mrs. Edith V. Chalmers, Eastside, and Benjamin W., Millington; three brothers, S.G., Point Richmond, Cal.; M.A., Sumner, and Cleon, in the U.S. navy; three sisters, Mrs. L. G. Masters, Mill Valley, Cal., Mrs. E. R. Hess, Allegany, and Mrs. George Sanford, Coquille. Seven grandchildren also survive.
