Longtime resident Richard “Dick” Kingston Merryman, 70, died Dec. 3, at Maine Medical Center Portland, surrounded by his family.

Merryman was active until the last day of his life and went lobstering – just as he had almost every day for nearly 50 years.

He was born in Brunswick, Sept. 18, 1945, the son of Arthur and Ida Orr Merryman.

He graduated from Brunswick High School with the class of 1964 and attended Husson College. Merryman was also a medic in the Army Reserves.

While visiting a Deering Ice Cream shop with friends, he met Karen Gustafson, who first became his best friend before becoming his wife on Nov. 24, 1971, in Wethersfield, Connecticut. Merryman knew great love, but also great loss after burying his wife, who died in 1996.

True to his name, Merryman was a jovial and friendly man who was respected in his community for his hard work and honesty. When he wasn’t on the water Merryman could be found him cutting trees from his wood lot or tapping maple trees.

He is survived by three sons, David R. Merryman, of Topsham, Bruce A. Merryman, of Harpswell and Scott J. Merryman, of Bowdoinham; a brother, John Merryman, of Brunswick; and three grandchildren, Karen Merryman, Adrianna Merryman and Colby Merryman.
