Richard Wilbur Steinke, 82


Richard was born November 11, 1922 in Iowa to John E. and Alvina (Granger) Steinke. His father was born in Nebraska; his mother in Ohio, and they were married in Arizona. They were a Protestant family. Richard and his 3 siblings were all born in Iowa.


The 1930 US Census shows the family living at 3405 5th Ave., Council Bluffs.

By 1935, the family had moved to a farm near Lewis, in Pottawatomie County, Iowa. The 1940 US Census lists:

John W., 54, head, engineer, Pacific Fruit Exchange

Alvina, 49, wife

John, 21, son, farmer

Frances, 19, dau, poster maker, WPA

Richard, 17, son


World War II broke out, and Richard went to Ft. Crook, NE where he was drafted on June 29, 1943. He left for foreign service Feb. 23, 1944, and returned March 16, 1946. He was honorably discharged March 21, 1946.


He married Dorothy J. Kendall, and they were blessed with three sons.


In 1957, Richard and Dorothy were living at 3427 6th Ave., Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was working as a clerk inspector for the Pacific Fruit Express.


Richard retired as a clerical agent for the Pacific Fruit Express. He and Dorothy continued to live in Council Bluffs.


In August, 2005, at the age of 82, Richard passed away.


Left to cherish his memory are his wife; sons: John R. Steinke and Jerry W. Steinke (Gloria), all Co. Bluffs; James E. Steinke (Pat), Blair, NE; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; brother, John W. Steinke, Denver, CO.


Funeral service, Wednesday, 1 pm Cutler-O'Neill Chapel. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation, 6-8 pm Tuesday, at the mortuary. Memorials to Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church, Council Bluffs, Iowa.


Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home, 545 Willow Avenue, Council Bluffs, Iowa in service to the family.
