Virdie Matilda Hackett, 86, passed away in Bend, Oregon on Monday, April 5, 2010. Virdie was born in Puyallup, WA on July 2, 1923 to Pearl Pansey (Trumbull) and Guy I. Dittmer. Her family moved from Washington to Central Oregon in the mid 1920s where they lived and worked in several Shevlin-Hixon Lumber Company logging camps including Shevlin, Chemult, Stage Coach Summit and China Hat.

In 1940 Virdie married her first husband, Jesse Capps from Bend, Oregon. They had one son, Jack Lee Capps and a daughter Francis Louise Capps. In 1950, Virdie married her second husband Chester Edward (Chet) Hackett. They had two sons, Chester Paul (Paul) Hackett and Kenneth Stalcup. After the closing of the Shevlin–Hixon lumber camps in the early 1950’s the Hackett’s moved to Mt. Shasta and eventually moved to the Coquille/Coos Bay area to work in the lumber mills. In the 1960’s Chet and Virdie started their own roofing company. Virdie was a very adept businesswoman, owning and operating Chet Hackett Roofing along with her husband, Chet. After selling the roofing company she held a full time position as a purchasing agent for Conrad Lumber Company in Coos Bay.

One of Virdie’s accomplishments during her lifetime was becoming the first female journeyman carpenter in Coos Bay. In their retirement Chet and Virdie moved to Eugene, Oregon. Virdie worked for Breeden Bros. construction company.

After the passing of Chet in 1992, Virdie moved to Mt. Angel, Oregon then on to Austin, Texas until she returned to Bend in 2001. Virdie will be remembered for her keen memory for names and events, her ready sense of humor, her deep laugh, her love of fishing, hunting, her fresh crab feeds and her many tales of life in the Shevlin-Hixon logging camps.

Virdie is survived by three sons and their families Jack and Wanda Hackett of Bandon; Paul and Olivia Hackett of Cresent Lake; Ken and Debby Stalcup of LaCenter, Washington; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She will be deeply missed. A private family memorial service has been held in celebration of her life. Donations in her memory can be made to the Deschutes County Historical Society, 129 NW Idaho Ave., Bend, OR 97701
