Dr. Riley Sherman Stallings, Jr. passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at his residence after an extended illness with his loving wife and children by his side. Riley was born on October 11, 1934 the only child of the late Riley Sherman Stallings and Clara Sorrell Stallings.

Riley attended Duke University on a football scholarship from 1952 to 1955 and graduated from the School of Dentistry at UNC Chapel Hill in 1959. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army for 3 years as a dentist and upon returning to Durham, he opened his practice where he served the Durham community faithfully from 1962 through 1991. Although he was a devoted Duke Alumni and fan he was beloved by all of his patients—Duke and UNC alike.

Following his retirement, he enjoyed going to Fitness World almost every day and made some of his most special friends during this time. He was known by many people there as "The Mayor", and he loved his conversations around the coffee pot. He also loved cooking, particularly his special pies and homemade bread which he made for his family and friends.

Riley is survived by his wife, Carolyn Dickson-Brooks; his beloved sons, Mark Sherman Stallings (and wife Cindi), Scott Fleming Stallings, and Robert Page Stallings (and wife Elizabeth); two step-sons, David Max Dickson, Jr. (and wife Natalie), and D. Glenn Dickson (and wife Amy); his beloved grandchildren, Liza and Clare Stallings and his step-grandchildren Zachary, Max, Perry, Quinn, Cole, and Jordan Dickson.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at Epworth United Methodist Church in Durham with Pastor Karen Whitaker officiating. The family will receive friends just prior to the service from 12:30 until 1:30 at the church. There will be a private graveside service for the family at Maplewood Cemetery immediately following the service.
