Neal O. Abate, 78, of East Franklin, died Monday (Jan. 13, 2003) in Armstrong County Memorial Hospital, East Franklin.

Born March 4, 1924, in Kittanning, he lived there all his life.

He served in World War II with the Navy aboard the L.S.T. #957 during its entire commission.

Mr. Abate was a roll molder at Wean United, Vandergrift, retiring in 1982 after 30 years.

He was a member of the United Steel Workers of America and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ford City.

He enjoyed cooking, baking, woodworking, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Schaeffer Abate; two stepsons, James A. Stitt and D. Michael Stitt both of Kittanning; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, Benjamin Abate of Harrison and Paul Abate of Ford Cliff; and a sister, Josephine Petruzzi.

Also survived by six grandchildren, Elana Black, Amy Pomaybo and Jamie, Sara, Samantha and Joey Stitt.

He was preceded in death by a stepson, Terry L.G. Stitt in 1993; parents, Vincenzo and Maria Porco Abate; and a brother, Adam G. Abate.

Friends will be welcomed from 7 to 9 p.m. today in BAUER FUNERAL HOME, 515 North McKean Street, Kittanning, where services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Carl Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Lawn Haven Burial Estates, East Franklin.
