"J. S. ROWLAND (AUTOBIOGRAPHY)

John Seaborn Rowland was born to Thaddeus Murphy Rowland and Mandy Margaret Langston Rowland November 8, 1881, (Seaborn was later changed to Seba) in Fayette County, Alabama near Waysiciti P. O.

Father, Mother, and I went by wagon to Columbus, Mississippi on the Illinois Central Railroad to Columbus, Kentucky where we crossed the Mississippi River on a Railroad Ferry over to Missouri where we boarded the Iron Mountain Southern Railroad to Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where we boarded a wagon to Black Springs up in Caddo Cove in west Arkansas where we stayed three years and my brother, Murphy Leonedus was born in Montgomery County on October 23, 1884.

Then we left Arkadelphia, Arkansas on the Iron Mountain Southern to Ft. Worth, Texas, but we got off at Grapevine, Texas, where we stayed three years, where my sister, Hattie Myrtle Rowland, was born in Denton County, Texas, January 9, 1887. Where I found a cousin of mine by the name of Bell Autry, we were close friends.

We left Denton County by wagon for Blanco County; on the road we crossed the Brazos River at Granbury, Texas, on a bridge that was built in 1878. Then we continued on the Colorado River south of Burnet, Texas, where we crossed the Colorado River by ferry, ten on to Blanco County, Texas where we stayed three years. I started to school there. My first teacher’s name was Prof. Stubbs. He was a good teacher. I started to school in Webster’s Blue Back Speller. My brother, Walter Pervia Rowland, was born in Blanco County, July 9, 1890. We crossed the Colorado River by fording close to Goldthwaite, Texas, then on to Brown County, Texas by way of San Saba County, Texas, where we lost a yearling colt. Arriving in Brownwood Christmas eve night, we lost our team for two months by theft. Then we started for Scurry County, Texas. We went to get us a home by filing on 160 acres, but the land was in intigation we stayed until July, 1891, but went back to Bosque County in search of work. We found a patch of cotton near Eulogy, Texas, and started to picking. Mother and I came down with slow fever and by the time we got over the fever, all of the cotton was out in Bosque County, so we found 4 or 5 bales on the Johnson-Hill County side and we forded the Brazos River at Brazos Point, Texas,so Father went up to a settlement on the road between Cleburne and Glen Rose, Texas, and rented a place on the halves where we lived two years.I went to school at Buck Creek where my two teachers were Mr. W. M. Spinks and his sister Miss Lonnie Spinks.

Here at Buck Creek, I attended a Camp meeting at Georges Creek School House, held by the Missionary of Palry (Paluxy) Baptist Association by Brother J. S. Sparks, where I surrendered my all to Christ my Savior and I joined the Baptist Church at Buck Creek School House in 1894 at the age of 14. I was baptized in the Brazos River were Palerxy (Paluxy) Creek runs into it five miles from Glen Rose, Texas. Then is when I was born again as Jesus taught when he was teaching Nicodemus.

My brother, Hiram Calvin Rowland, was born June 8, 1894, in Somervell County, Texas. Then we moved to Georges Creek, Texas. I went to school at Georges Creek. My teacher was Horace Cover.

My brother, Jesse Carroll Rowland, was born at Georges Creek in Somervell County, Texas, December 7, 1897 (1896). We moved to Mitchel Bend, Texas, December,1897, to the old Coony Mitchel place. I went to school to Prof. Edwards. Oscar Branch and Miss Olive Saddler. My brother, Floyd Clinton Rowland, was born in the Somervell CO., Mitchel Bend June 15, 1899. I went to school at Bald Knob to Mr. R. J. Potts. My brother, Ross Arvin Rowland, was born October 29, 1902, in Hood County, Texas. We moved to the Alf Watters place in 1904. My sister was born there. Her name was Lovella Bea Rowland. She was born in Hood County on March 21, 1905.

I was married to Miss Sarah Paredine Carr of Toccopola, Mississsippi on Sept. 9, 1906, at Hill City, Texas by Brother B. J. Carter. I went to school at Granbury University Training School for 9 months and taught two schools in Texas at Antioch 3 miles northwest of Tolar in 1906-1907 and at Pleasant View 1907-1908. The high grade teacher was Prof. J.F. Statcup. After school was out we moved to Oklahoma.

My oldest son was born in Texas, June 3, 1907, in Hood County, Texas, Quay Rowland.

Our second son was born in Jackson County, Oklahoma, November 15, 1911. His name is William Barrett Travis Rowland.

Our third son was born June 9, 1918, in Love County, Oklahoma. His name is Thomas Woodrow Rowland.

We moved to Foss, Oklahoma, in 1908 in May. My father-in-law and brother’s in-law met us at Foss and we moved into the house with my wife’s folks for the rest of 1908.

In 1908 we moved on the Dave Berrie farm 1 mile north and 2 miles west and ¾ miles north of Dill where we lived one year. While I was at that place, I was ordained as a deacon. The ordination council from other churches Bro. R. E. Smith, Pastor; Bro. C, T. Perkins, Minister; Bro. George Boafee, Deacon; Bro. Lee Castleberry, Deacon.

In 1957 I went to Clinton Hospital with pneumonia and form there to Elk Rest Home at Elk City, Oklahoma then to Cordell Eventide Rest Home where wife died on January 29, 1959. I came back to Elk Rest home on October 1, 1959, then I moved to Bethel Rest home August 31, 1960, and am still here."
