A "Lucky" Accident

Radar Men Aid As Boy Pinned Beneath Truck

TRONA--An unfortunate accident that still was termed a "lucky" one (as it could have been far more serious) resulted in a broken foot and facial and head cuts to Malcolm Knight of Argus, and a slight concussion and bad body bruises to his son, Mackie, 10, when the truck in which they were carrying Sun papers toppled over eight miles, north of Four Corners early last Sunday.

The truck owned by Sun dealer Don Taylor.

According to Taylor, the accident occurred when the left rear tire blew out, throwing the truck into a swerving spin. The right front tire then is assumed to have hit something and blown, throwing the truck into a counter spin and it landed upside down in the desert.

Luckily, the accident occurred at the foot of the radar station, where it was immediately spotted and men rushed down to offer first aid to the driver.
When they saw that the boy had been pinned inside the upturned truck, a call was issued to the naval base for aid and about 60 men responded.
(See footnote 1)

The volunteers lifted the truck while Knight and a man from the radar station crawled under and released the boy.

The two were then taken to the Trona Hospital where their injuries were treated and the father registered as a patient.

That's the reason the Trona-Ridgecrest editions of the Sunday's paper were late or failed to arrive at all, as hundreds were destroyed in the accident.

(1) The China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station, NAWS, is the installation located in the Western Mojave Desert region of California, approximately 150 miles north of Los Angeles.. Occupying 1.1 million acres in three counties – Kern, San Bernardino, and Inyo – the installation's closest neighbors are the city of Ridgecrest and the communities of Inyokern, Trona, and Darwin.
