Bernhardt (Benny) Ebel Sr., 45, former well known local amateur boxer and handyman for the Stag baseball team since the opening of the Belleville Athletic Field, died at county hospital at 9:30 yesterday morning from a lingering illness.
Ebel was born in Belleville, Jan. 7, 1893, a son of William and Elizabeth Ebel, nee Spindler, both of whom survive. His mother is now Mrs. Elizabeth Steinkraus. In 1920, he was married to Miss Mabel Haas in St. Louis.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his widow and the following children: Bernhardt, Elmer, Wilbert, Warren, Robert, Melba, Vernell, Alice and Shirley, all at home; brothers and sisters: Walter of South High Street; Adam and Emil Steinkraus, half-brothers (the latter of East St. Louis, the former of Belleville); Ella, wife of John Bauer of Freeburg; Letta, wife of Elmer Kroening of 219 Kretschmer Avenue and Elizabeth, wife of Ray Larkens of Jackson, Mich.
Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the Gaerdner Funeral Home to Walnut Hill Cemetery, with Rev. B. J. Koehler, pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical Church officiating.
