He was born on October 8, 1936 in Scioto County, the son of the late Floyd and Mildred Canter McClay. Roger was a graduate of Wilmington College with a bachelor's degree and received his master's degree from the College of William and Mary. He was a member of the United States Air Force, the Central Church of Christ, and the Gideons. Roger also was a teacher for 30 years in the Piketon and Valley Local school districts and an adjunct teacher at Shawnee State University. Roger had a passion for farming and his sweet corn.
Roger is survived by his wife of 54 years, L. Faye Spradlin McClay, whom he married on June 2, 1962 in Scioto County; 3 sons, Rick (Becky) McClay of McDermott, Randy (Gina) McClay and Ryan (Bridget) McClay both of Lucasville; one brother, John (Shirley) McClay of Lucasville; 2 sisters, Ruth (Walter) Phipps of Glouster, Ohio and Mary McClay of Beavercreek, Ohio; and 3 grandchildren, Aaron McClay of Nelsonville, Jacob McClay of Athens and Colleen McClay of McDermott.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at the Central Church of Christ in Portsmouth, with Pastor Dennis Dawes officiating. Interment will follow in Lucasville Cemetery, with graveside military rites by the William A. Baker Post 363 in Lucasville and the James Erwin Post 622 of Minford. The family will receive friends at the Adkins-Brant Funeral Home in Portsmouth on Friday from 4 until 8 p.m. on Friday and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Central Church of Christ, the Gideons, or SOMC Hospice in Rogers' name.
