SALISBURY- Surrounded by his loved ones, Harold Buddy Abernathy went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on August 12, 2016, following a period of declining health.

He was born in his home in Kimball Town on April 20, 1932, to the late Vera Belk Abernathy and Avery Lee Abernathy. Bud was educated at Farm Life High School in China Grove.

Bud was married 59 years to the love of his life, Novella Myers Abernathy. They enjoyed traveling while in the military. Bud honorably served his county and retired from the United States Air Force with 20 years of service. He was stationed in Texas, Japan, Nevada, Hawaii, Washington, D.C., Alaska and retired in South Carolina. He also retired from Duke Power after 17 years of service in supervision.

Bud was a lifetime member of South China Grove Baptist Church. Throughout the years, he served as a Deacon and was an active member of his Sunday School Class. He was also Chairman of the Building & Ground Committee and he was involved in the Brotherhood.

Bud was an active member of the China Grove America Legion Post #0185 and was voted by his peers as Chaplain of the Year. He was also a member of Eureka Masonic Lodge #283, Rowan Shrine Club and Oasis Shriners.

He was a happy man with a rod and reel in his hand. He enjoyed going to the beach fishing with his wife and friends, loved old cars, riding go carts, motorcycles, anything with the outdoors. He never met a stranger and loved to talk to people. Most of all, he loved his Lord and spending time with his family.

He is preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Abernethy and David Abernathy.

With sincere gratitude, we would like to thank our loving friends and church family for your love and prayers and to our Dad's caregivers, thank you for your care and support.

The family would like to express a heartfelt thanks to the Critical Care Unit of Novant Health Rowan Medical Center for the excellent care of Bud and support of our family.

Arrangements: Funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Monday, Aug. 15 at South China Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tony Wagner and Rev. Derald Adams officiating, visitation will be prior to the service from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the church. Burial will be held Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 2:00 PM at Salisbury National Cemetery.
