Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island. Homegoing services will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Second Baptist Church, 919 6th Avenue, Rock Island. Interment will follow at Rock Island National Cemetery, with honors provided by American Legion Post 246, Moline.
Matthew was born on December 21, 1925 in Chicago, the son of Matthew F. Sr. and Louella (Gordon) Parker. He was a Navy veteran, having served during World War II. He attended the University of Illinois. On December 18, 1948, Matthew married Katherine Bowen in Moline, Illinois. She preceded him in death on July 1, 1998.
Matthew worked at IH Farmall in Rock Island for 39 years. He also owned and operated Parker Janitorial Service for 33 years with his wife, Katherine. He was a member of New Journey A.M.E. Church in Moline. Active with the Democratic Party, Matthew served for 23 years as a precinct committeeman, and served as a trustee for Rock Island Township for over 35 years. He also was a member of the Martin Luther King Center Active Club.
Mr. Parker was very active as a Freemason, having belonged to King Solomon Lodge#20 F & A.M. P.H.A., Tri-Cities Consistory #82, Masqat Temple #141 Imperial Council A.E.A.O.N.M.S., United Supreme Council of Scottish Rite of Freemasonry - 33rd Degree, Commander of the Rite, Desert Rat Degree Team, Downstate Brotherhood Club of Illinois, Past Master Council #10 of 2nd District, Past President of Past Master Council, Past Patron Adah Chapter #10 Order of the Eastern Star, Starlight Club, District Deputy Grand Patron O.E.S.
Those left to honor his memory include his children, Cynthia (Craig) Parker-McGee, Rock Island, Michael Parker, Rock Island, and Rosemary (Donnie) Childs, Moline; grandchildren, Robert Parker, Rock Island, Brittany Parker, Minnesota, and Xavier Parker, Galesburg; great-grandchildren, Julian and Jada Parker, Emmanuel Bomar, Cienna Pettit, X'zayviyanah Parker, and Jamaine Jones; special friend, Thresa Johnson, Rock Island, special niece, Allison Martin, Georgia, and several other nieces and nephews.
