James L. Nutt, 93 of Sioux City, passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2016 at a local hospital. A Private family service will be on Friday, August 5th at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, August 4th at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with family present at 6:00 p.m. and a Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.meyerbroschapels.com In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in Jim's name for a charity to be determined at a later date.
James L. Nutt was born on January 19, 1923 in Burnett County, Texas the son of Richard Gordon and Lucy (Williams) Nutt. He married the love of his life Gloria Jean (Wilson) Nutt on July 5, 1945 in Lincoln, Nebraska. They shared 58 wonderful years together until her passing on November 8, 2003. Jim served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He was a bombardier flying 30 combat missions over enemy territory and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. At the time of his honorable discharge he was a 1st Lieutenant.
At the start of his career he worked for several years as a Project Engineer for the Nebraska Highway Department. In 1953 he began his career with Western Contracting Corporation (WCC) and retired from there in 1988 as Chief Engineer in their Marine Division. He loved his work during the 35 years he spent with WCC. The family lived in many states and he also had the opportunity to travel out of the country at times.
In his earlier years Jim,( Pa) as he was known to the grandchildren, enjoyed hunting and fishing. His hobbies also included golfing and gardening and he completed the Master Gardner course in 1996. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. His granddaughter, great grandsons and those two little great great granddaughters were his pride and joy. He was always excited to attend all of their activities and was so proud of them.
Survivors include: a daughter Janice and her husband Larry Petersen; granddaughter Lori Meier, great grandsons, Daniel (Kayla) Meier and Zachary Meier; and great great granddaughters Jaelyn and Makenzie Meier all of Sioux City. He was proceeded in death by his wife Gloria Jean, his parents, a brother R. G. Nutt Jr. , and sisters, Shirley Sudderth, Sybil Townsend and Wanda Jean Nutt.
