Melvin Ryder
Melvin "Mel" Ryder, 85, of Burlington, died at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at Morning Sun Care Center.
Born June 4, 1919, in Gilliland, Texas, he was the son of William Edward and Lillie Mae Myers Ryder. On Nov. 23, 1945, he married Eulalia Covington in Seymour, Texas.
Mr. Ryder worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and was owner/operator of Mel's Diesel Shop for 30 years. After retiring, he worked at the garden center of Wal-Mart in Burlington.
He was a 1938 graduate of Truscott High School in Truscott, Texas. He was a World War II Navy veteran, where he served on submarines. He was a member of Church of Christ, Lions Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Submarine Veterans Association and West Burlington Planning and Zoning Board. He was an avid gardener.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Renee Moss of Burlington and Melissa Keeley of Crowell, Texas; one son, Earl "Butch" Ryder of Dandridge, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one brother, Myers Ryder of Wichita Falls, Texas; and one sister, Edith Cash of Crowell.
He was preceded in death by one son, his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Ryder will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Lunning Chapel, with Bill Walkup, minister of Church of Christ, officiating. Burial with full military rites conducted by Veterans Honor Guard of VFW Posts 9162 and 10102, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League and AMVETS Post 29 will be in Long Creek Cemetery in rural Danville.
A memorial has been established.
