SEPT. 8, 1929 — JULY 29, 2016


BLOOMINGTON — Phyllis A. (Wood) Adkins, 86, of Bloomington, passed away on Friday, July 29, 2016, at the IU Health Hospice House, with her family by her side.

Phyllis was born September 8, 1929, in Bloomington and was the daughter of the late Dewey and Alpha Mae (Dewar) Wood. She was a 1947 graduate of Bloomington High School and worked for over 40 years as a cook for various fraternities and sororities at Indiana University. Phyllis loved to quilt, crochet, read and cook, but time spent with family was her greatest joy.

She married Russell Adkins on June 19, 1947, and they were married for 66 years until his death on August 20, 2013.

Survivors include five children, three daughters, one from Spencer, Bedford and Connersville and two sons both of Spencer. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, one stepgrandson, 17 great-grandchildren and three sisters, Carolyn Robinson of Bedford and two other sisters from Martinsville and Bloomington.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and husband; two grandsons, Adam Adkins and Kyle O'Brien; son-in-law Robert Kelley; and 13 brothers and sisters.

Services for Phyllis will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St., Bloomington. Pastor Danny Hillenburg will conduct the service, and burial will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens. Visitation will be on Monday, August 1, 2016, from 4-8 p.m. and from 10 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at The Funeral Chapel.
