Francine Greenstein Liftig, a resident of Avon for 63 years, passed away at the Avon Health Center July 21, 2016 in her 93rd year. Fran was an internationally recognized artist, an Army wife through two wars, a sharpshooter, yoga instructor, and a gifted spiritualist. She was born in New Britain in 1924 to the late Dr. Charles Greenstein and Dorothy Ziering Greenstein, and was a graduate of New Britain High School, Class of 1941, Columbia University School of Dental Hygiene, Class of 1944, and studied at the Maryland Institute of Art and the Paier Art Institute, Hamden, CT. Fran and her husband of 66 years, the late Dr. Alvin Liftig, moved to Avon in 1953 where they raised two sons, and where she was President of the Avon Woman's Club, a member of the Connecticut Pen Women's Association, and the West Hartford Art League. Until recently, she served on the Board of the Evergreen Cemetery, Avon. Fran and Al lived in Sarasota, Florida for ten years where she was a member of the Petticoat Painters and the Sarasota Art League. She will be remembered for her prize-winning paintings, many of which are in public and private collections throughout the United States, Europe, and Canada; three are on permanent display at the UConn Health Center, Farmington. She is pre-deceased by her sister Helen Chestney, of Los Angeles, California. Fran leaves two sons: Dr. Robert Liftig (Inez), of Westport; Dr. Rick Liftig (Kathleen), of West Hartford, and four grandchildren: Anya Liftig of Milford, CT, Dorothy Martin (David) of Boston, Kevin Liftig (Allison) of Cromwell, CT, and Alyssa Liftig, of Boston. Visiting hours will be at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon, between 6-8 PM, Monday, July 25. Burial will be private. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in Fran's name be made to the Avon Health Center Residents' Committee, 652 W. Avon Road, Avon, CT 06001; the Avon Lion's Club, PO Box 39, Avon, CT 06001; the Avon Senior Center, 635 W. Avon Road, Avon, CT 06001; or to any other worthy charity of your choice.
