August 16, 1931 - July 17, 2016

Zonnie F. Anderson Jr, 84, passed away peacefully Sunday July 17 at home with his family by his side. He was born August 16, 1931 in McColl, SC to Zonnie F. Anderson Sr and Ruby Farmer Anderson of Lumberton, NC. At 19, he enlisted in the Unites States Army for two years and was assigned to Bulchbach, Germany. Upon his return he was honorably discharged and took a break from the Army for 89 days. It was during this break when he met the love of his life, Vollie G. Richardson, daughter of Vollie Edward Richardson and Thetis Norris Richardson of Lumberton, NC. They shared their vows and were wed on July 4, 1954. On the 90th day, he reenlisted for six years and the newlyweds departed for Trois Fontaine France where they stayed from Nov 1957 to Nov 1960. After their tour in France, they were transferred to Fort Bragg, NC where he served with the 82nd Airborne Division. From there Zonnie served in Germany, Fort Knox, Kentucky and Fort Hood, Texas before heading to Vietnam where he served for a year. Following a short one month break back at Fort Bragg, he returned to Vietnam to serve for six more months. After his time serving in Vietnam, he traveled back to Fort Bragg and then onto Thailand for a year. Finally in 1971 he returned to Fort Bragg where SFC Anderson applied for retirement from the Army. Zonnie served in the United States Army honorably and with distinction for 20 years and 21 days.
In Oct 1971, Zonnie started his new career when he was hired by Warren Brothers Construction to operate a road grader which he used to cut out the streets in Golden Gate City and other streets in the Estates. He later used his military leadership experience to form his own successful company, Z. Anderson Trucking and Grading. For 38 years, he was the owner operator of his company until he was 74 years old. He was 32nd degree Master Mason and member of the Scottish Rites and the Araba Shriners.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years and four loving daughters, Vickie Anderson Barrs (Stanley), Karen Sue Anderson Davis (Major), Justina Anderson Allen (Tommy) and Crystal Anderson Selvaggio (Gaetano); eight grandchildren, Carrie Collins, Stanley Barrs Jr, Jacob Crews, Justin Barrs, Emmanuel Selvaggio, Anthony Selvaggio, Nicholas Selvaggio and Tomacina Emily Allen; six great grandchildren Corey Barrs, Cole Barrs, Miley Barrs, Leelee Barrs, DeLaine Barrs and Madalyn Collins. He is also survived by brother William Anderson of Lumberton NC and sister Peggy Cox of Supply, NC.
