After arriving in Vietnam, Zed was assigned to Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
Lima Company was on a patrol in the vicinity of Chau Son (1), 10 kilometers south southwest of the Danang Airfield, when Zed stepped on and detonated a hostile mine. Zed was med evac and died at 0945H, while receiving medical treatment of fragmentation wounds to the body that he suffered at 0815H.
