Captain Gates married Rebecca Shawn "Becky" Farley on July 14, 1990, in Sedona, Yavapai County, Arizona. He graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1983 from Daniel Webster College in Nashua, New Hampshire. A third generation military pilot, U.S. Air Force Capt. Gates flew an F-16 at the time of the Gulf War. He died in a test flight accident in the Nevada Desert. He had no children. A resident hall at Daniel Webster College has been named in his honor.
