The daughter of Charles P. and Genette (Gaffney) Crites, Mary married T. Kenneth Mattimoe on December 28, 1933, at Toledo, Ohio. She graduated from Bowling Green Normal School with a degree in Elementary Education and taught for several years in many Toledo parochial schools. After the youngest of their eleven children had started school, Mrs. Mattimoe offered free foster care for 40-50 pre-adoptive newborns over the next 20 years. She was a member of the Swanton chapter of the Business and Professional Women's Club and received their Mother of the Year award.
