Mr. Ackerman was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in the Vietnam war as a member of the medical corps. He received his training at the Bethesda Hospital in Maryland. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

His parents were Eldred Valentin Ackerman 1927-2001 and Myrna "Maryann" D. Palmantier, m. 1947.
