Paul H. Richard, 88, a resident of Forwood Manor and previously of Lanside Drive, Foulkside, died on Wednesday, November 25, 2009. He was born in 1921 in Erie, Pa., to Roy and Loretta (Schendler) Richard.

Paul graduated from Penn State in 1942 where he was a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Pi Tau Sigma and Tau Beta Pi honorary fraternities and Triangle social fraternity. As part of the Air Corp Enlisted Reserve during WWII, he worked at NASA in Cleveland, Ohio. Subsequently, he worked for Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton and joined DuPont in 1949, retiring in 1982 after technical and marketing assignments in Wilmington and Detroit. After retirement, he tutored many students in math at local schools and at a tutoring service. Retirement also provided him an opportunity to continue to perfect his vegetable garden and indulge in woodworking as a hobby. He was a longtime member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and attended the Academy of Lifelong Learning (A.L.L.) for over 20 years, enjoying close to 200 classes. His firm belief in the value of education was also evident in his membership in the University of Delaware Legacy Society. His personalized brick is on the Diamond Walkway to Old College.

Paul was also a lifelong car racing enthusiast and attended many Indianapolis 500 races as a member of their technical committee. In fact, he was such an enthusiast that he even attended the Skip Barber School of Racing in Limerock, Conn., to become the next Mario Andretti or so he hoped. His professional affiliations included memberships with SAE and ASLE.

His wife of 54 years, Georgia Thelma, died in 1998. His brother Ted and sister Nancy Horner also preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter, Ann and her husband, John Michael Devenney; his son, Alan P. Richard and his wife, Wendy, and two grandchildren, Paul Andrew Richard and Michael John Richard.

A funeral service will be held in Wilmington, Del. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 2313 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803 or The Academy of Lifelong Learning, 2700 Pennsylvania Ave., Wilmington, DE 19806-1154.
