Dora Huff was born 26 Apr 1876 to Russell Bean Huff and Frances Mildra Winters. The family came from Mississippi and moved, first near Rising Star TX, then to Lampasas County, Texas in the late 1870s. Her parents' marriage ended, and her brothers, Jesse, Arthur, and Edgar went with their father, while Dora and her sister Althea went with their mother.

By 1900, Dora had become a pioneer school teacher at Durwood, Indian Territory. She married Franklin Decal Cornell, a pioneer grocer in Durwood, at her mother's home on 21 Jan 1900. They moved to Ardmore about 1902. They lived mostly in Carter County, but also lived in Harmon County for a few years.

They had four children.
