On January 1, 1889 Edgar married Lula Mae Watts in Lindale, Georgia.
John and Mae were the parents of nine children: Leo Watts , John William, Clarence Marion, Lillian May, Marvin McCall, Grace Lee, Edgar Talmadge, Avis Rebecca and Albert Waters Butler.

Prominent Texas Valley Citizen Died in Lindale
E.M. Butler, well known resident of the Texas Valley, community died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A.A. Wood, 123 Avenue D, Lindale, where he had gone for a visit about ten days ago. He suffered an attack of double pneumonia.
Mr. Butler had been a resident of Floyd County for 50 years, and was a faithful member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, north of Rome. He is survived by his widow, five sons, L.W., C.M., M.M., E.T. and A.W. all of Floyd County, two daughters, Mrs. A.A. Wood of Lindale and Miss Avis Butler, of Texas Valley. His mother, Mrs. John W. Butler, three brothers and one sister also survive.
Funeral and burial were held Friday morning at 11 o'clock a the Pleasant Valley Baptist chruch, of which he was a member. The funeral will be conducted by Rev. Willie Conn, assisted by Rev. Monroe Peek. Interment will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Four sons and two sons-in-law will act as pallbearers.
Emmett Cole, mortician, had charge of the funeral arrangements.
