SHIRLEY JEAN GARISS GIBBS, a resident of Holiday Island, was born June 2, 1937, in Preston, Kan., a daughter of Arthur and Lois (Spencer) Gariss. She died on Oct. 17, 2008, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Mo., at the age of 71. Shirley was a secretary for 41 years and retired from Sprint in 1996. Shirley and her husband, Richard Gibbs, lived in Fort Madison, Iowa; Woodridge, Ill.; and Lenexa, Kan., prior to moving to Holiday Island in 1995. They bought their home in Holiday Island in 2004.

Shirley was a member of the Holiday Island Community Church. She was a grand officer of Eastern Star; she was a member of the Red Hat Society; and a member of the Elks Auxiliary.

On Feb. 27, 1958, Shirley married Richard Raymond Gibbs, who survives her of the home. She is also survived by her two brothers, Larry Gariss and his wife Donna, and Jim Gariss, both of Santa Rosa, Calif.; two sisters, Lynette Smith and her husband Darrell of Holiday Island, and Patricia Parrett of Las Vegas, Nev.; her uncle, Robert Gariss of Lamar, Mo.; her aunt, Sharon Bell of Springfield, Mo.; her aunt, Hazel Clouse of Orlando, Fla.; her son David Gibbs and his wife Bonnie of El Reno, Okla.; a daughter, Melody Cohen and her husband Dennis of Marseilles, Ill; six grandsons, Zack, David, Dustin, Jamie, Derek, and Chad; one granddaughter Billie Jo; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held on Nov. 15, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the Holiday Island Community Church with Pastor Allen Thrasher officiating.

Cremation arrangements were made through Nelson Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be sent to the Student of the Year, Elks Lodge of Holiday Island, PO Box 3087, Holiday Island, AR 72631.
