Tattoo Artist. Better known as Sailor Jerry. He is considered by many to be the grandfather of old school tattoo art. Jerry Collins joined the United States Navy at age 19 to be able to see the world and remained a sailor all his life. He soon became enamored with the art of tattoo and began to study this art in Southeast Asia. He began using sterile needles and mixing his own colors, techniques that are now widely used today. He soon had quite a reputation for his bold colors, his extreme attention to detail (ships rigging, etc.) and very attractive flash that feature buxom women, anchors and panthers, pirates. He started a style trend that was a large part of the sailors underworld culture. He opened his first tattoo shop in Honolulu's Chinatown. He was the skipper of a large three-masted schooner, which conducted tours of the Hawaiian islands. Sailor Jerry was also widely known as the host of his own night talk show on KTRG radio, where he broadcast as "Old Ironsides."
