David Franklin was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts a year before his father, Jonathan, was killed there by Indians. His mother, Sarah (Smith) [Stevens], married a third time, John Fields of Boston. The family was living in Hull, Massachusetts when David married Elizabeth Ayres, only daughter of Moses Ayres, Jr., on June 18,1718 in Boston MA. David was 1st cousin of Benjamin Franklin of Philadelphia PA.

David was a sea captain, commanding the sloop, GEORGE. The sloop about 60 tons with 4 guns. Captain Franklin was employed by the Crown to transport men and supplies by ship, where needed, in the colonial's frequent battles with the Indians along the New England coast. Mention of David Franklin may be found in various volumes of early 18th century Boston, MA history. He served the colony well against its enemies until his death in 1739.
