Mary grew up in the Ogdensburg area. She and her sisters appeared in Vaudeville, first as the Stewart Sisters.

First husband was Gene Carroll, they had three children. After their divorce Mary opened a Japanese tea room called The Green Dragon. It was located 1/2 mile west of Burdickville, overlooking Glen Lake.

Mary married Carroll Ames in 1944 in Jackson, Michigan. Carroll, who was called Ames within the family, and Mary had a combination gift and barber shop in the small town of Empire, Michigan.

Her middle name of Dorothy is documented on the marriage certificate of her son Eugene to Dorothy Bridgewater.
