Both Melvina Jane and her infant daughter died from smallpox on Jan. 16,1858. They were buried in the same grave, the first burial in the Early Cemetery. The first acre of the cemetery was donated by Melvina's father, John G. Early, also died from smallpox on Jan. 28,1858. (Melvina was born in 1831, rather than 1813 on marker.)
