During action in the Philippines on April 18 death came to Aviation Machinists Mate First Class William F. Karls, Jr., age 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Karls, 1626 Carmen, Chicago, Illinois. Mate Karls, who entered the navy on January 17, 1942, had served in the Atlantic for a year as an aerial gunner and aviation machinist. He saw duty in Greenland, Iceland, England, Ireland, and North Africa before his squadron was transferred to the Pacific theater.

A former student at Lane Technical High School, he graduated from Admundsen High School where he was a captain in the ROTC and active in all sports activities. He also attended Northwestern University and De Kalb State Teachers College before going in to the Navy.

In addition to his parents, Mate Karls is also surved by his sister, Kathryn Marie Karls, and his grandmother, Mrs. Catherine Clemens. Aviation Machinist's Mate 1c, USNR. Killed in service during World War II in an airplane crash in the Philippine Islands.

U.S. Navy PB4Y-1 Liberator, Bureau № 38896, nicknamed "Lucky Puss" crashed after takeoff, due to engine failure, on Palawan Island, Philippines. All aboard died as a result of the crash.
