O.F. Starwalt, Former Coles Official, Dies - Charleston Carnegie Public Library

Oliver F. Starwalt, 73 of 202 Briar Lane, former Coles County treasurer and president of the Mattoon Board of Education, died at 4 a.m. today at Memorial Hospital. He entered the hospital Friday morning.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Christian Church in Humboldt with Rev. Lawrence Beebe officiating. Burial will be in Humboldt Cemetery.

Masonic graveside rites will be conducted by the Arcola Masonic Lodge. Friends may call at the Shrader funeral home, Arcola, after noon Sunday.

Mr. Starwalt served as treasurer of Coles County from 1954-58. His son, Willard, is currently county treasurer. Mr. Starwalt was a member of the Board of Education of Community Unit District 2 from 1948 through 1954. He served as president of the board from 1948 through 1951.

Mr. Starwalt was supervisor of Humboldt Township for 18 years and served on the Humboldt Board of Education. He was president of the Humboldt board when it was consolidated with the Mattoon unit.

Mr. Starwalt taught school for 23 years in Coles and Cumberland counties and farmed in the Humboldt community for 35 years. He resided in Charleston while serving as county treasurer and moved to Mattoon in 1958.

He was a member of the Christian Church of Humboldt and the Arcola Masonic Lodge.

Oliver F. Starwalt was born in Janesville July 6, 1889, a son of Emanuel and Mary Ann Webb Starwalt. He married Bessie E. Seeley Feb. 20, 1910. She survives.

Besides his widow and the son, Willard of Charleston, he leaves another son, Rex, Brocton; seven daughters, Mrs. Esther Clark, Crawfordsville, Ind.; Mrs. Mona VonBehren and Mrs. Opal Borror, Mattoon; Mrs. Charlene Young, Hindsboro; Mrs. Mary Grooms, Sullivan; Mrs. Hettie Reece, Humboldt; and Mrs. Alice Speck, Terre Haute, Ind.; a brother, John, Paris; three sisters, Mrs. Iva Evans, Mrs. Ethel Evans and Mrs. Lydia Starwalt, Toledo, 14 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
