Eleni A. Koutonias (Ελένι Κοτονιά) was born on May 10, 1917, in California.

She married Andrew Mercouri in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1940. They moved to Marshalltown, Iowa, in 1944 and worked together in their family-owned Lillie Mae Candies on the South Side of Main Street. They were the parents of 3 daughters, Mary, Georgia, and Sophia. They were married for 70 years.

Obituary: Helen A. Mercury, 95, of Marshalltown, passed away on Wednesday, October 17, under the loving care of Iowa River Hospice. Helen was born in California and moved to Greece with her parents where she grew up. She returned to the United States in 1939 where she met and married Andrew in 1940 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

They moved to Marshalltown, Iowa, in 1944 when Andrew became part of Lillie Mae Candies. In 1972, he and Helen became sole owners of Lillie Mae. Helen made and dipped all the chocolates, made Christmas candy canes and ribbon candy, and, together, they made other sweet treats while Andy ran the soda fountain. She retired in 1985 when her daughter, Georgia, and son-in-law, Buck, moved to Marshalltown from California and took over the business.

Helen and Andy were members of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Des Moines, Iowa. People who knew Helen knew her as a beautiful and loving person, a devout Christian, and a perfectionist in all she did. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a sister, and two brothers. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Mary Mercury, Sophia Mercury, and Georgia (Buck) Dates all of Marshalltown. There was no visitation, and a private family funeral was held. Memorials may be directed to the Iowa River Hospice in Marshalltown

Additional notes: Helen's mother was Pagona Athanassios Hardaloupas. Helen had one sister, Katherine, who died in Greece in 1938 or 1939. After Helen was born, her family returned to Greece where her father died in 1921. Helen's mother remarried Charles (Constantine) George Karanasos, and they had 3 other children: Georgios K. Karanasos (1929-1998), Athanassios K Karanassos (1931-), and Sophia K. Karanasos (1933-). Helen returned to the United States where she met Andrew Mercury ("Mercouri") in Minnesota.
