Zoe Elizabeth Harris was born on a plantation in Livingston Parish near the town of Denham Spring, Louisiana. She was the first child of Charles and Nettie Harris. After mother died in 1903 she took over for a while and raised the rest of the children until her father re-married. Then Zoe moved to Houston. I do not know what year but she had married a man with last name of Orso. They had a daughter and she named it after her mother that had died, Nettie May Orso. This was before she moved to Houston. She bought a house and started running a rooming house where you could also board. This was where you rented a room and the meals were furnished. This was very common in that day. It allowed a person to have a place to eat and sleep. Most has a job but did not a have home. She made good with this rooming house and opened another. Later, my mother Evelyn came to Houston and lived with her until she married my dad.

At one time Zoe had owned a house like that in the 600 block of Polk Street. It was right behind Memorial Hospital. Today on the same spot the Hyatt Hotel is located in downtown Houston. Her home would have been in the area of where the hotel check in desk is located. She bought a house at 1816 Louisiana and it was a step up. It was just apartments with a common bathroom. She did not have to cook for them. Then she bought a house at 1416 Webster Street and sold the one on Louisiana. This also was a house with apartments with a common entrance but this one had separate baths in each apartment. Then she got out of the business and bought a house just for her self on Pecan Street in South Houston, Texas. She lived there until she went into the high rise Deminocon Rest Home on Almeda Street in Houston, Texas. This is where she died. She was buried in South Park Cemetery along side her husband Harry Gray and next to her daughter Nettie May Rush. Zoe also worked for Alright Parking Systems in Houston, Texas for years. She was cashier.
She live to be 96 years and 10 months and 21 days old.
