Elma was the youngest daughter of Edmund and May (Dippolt) Joiner. She was married twice, her first husband was George S. Ballard. They had one daughter together named Doris. Her second husband was Charles M Boyce. According to her obituary she worked as a cashier for S.F. Dunham and Company in Trenton, New Jersey. She lived with her husband at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Shinn, Sr. in Columbus, New Jersey. She died at Saint Francis hospital in Trenton, New Jersey, about a week before her 39th birthday.
