Thomas Lynn Obituary

Thomas William Lynn, 67, of Elizabeththown, died Monday, May 16, 2016, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville.

He was a native of Hardin County, served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Severns Valley Baptist Church. He retired from the United Steelworkers of America and Gates Rubber Co. and was past president of the Local No. 780. He was an avid University of Kentucky fan and loved helping others.

He was preceded in death by his father, William G. Lynn; and a brother, Homer Lynn.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy Jaggers Lynn; his mother, Sylvia Renfro Lynn of Rineyville; two sons, Tom Lynn of Elizabethtown and Jason Lynn of Preston, England; a brother, Jake (Janice) Lynn of Elizabethtown; and a sister, Ruth (Mark) Martin of Alabama.

The funeral is at 1 p.m. Friday at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown with Pastor Joe Thomas officiating. Burial follows in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Tommy was a Vietnam Era Veteran, he served in The U.S. Army, 1969-1971, Military Policeman at Ft. Knox, KY.

Tommy accepted Christ as an 8 year old boy at Wesleyan Church Camp in Maysville KY. In 1988 as a member of Severns Valley Baptist Church, he was baptized by Dr John Howard Cobble. Tommy was always quick to acknowledge God's blessings in his life, and it was deeply settled in his heart to return a portion of all that he had been given.

As past President of the URW (United Rubber, Cork, Linoleum and Plastic Workers of America) Local No. 780. As union organizer, International Staff Representative, and finally negotiator for USWA. (On July 2, 1995, URW merged into the United Steelworkers of America.) Through all his work with the union he stood up for workers' rights and gave them a voice. Tommy was a trade unionist through and through.

The Commonwealth of Kentucky Labor Cabinet Commissioned him as an Honorary Ambassador of Labor on March 14, 1986 by John Calhoun Wells Secretary of Labor.

Tommy was Commissioned a Kentucky Colonel, October 20th 1988, by Governor Wallace G. Wilkinson.

In 1991 Tommy was part of the negotiations at Bridgestone/Firestone, in Warren County, Tenn. The Union won recognition at Bridgestone's new plant based on a card check.

On September 27 1999, George Loomis Becker, USW International President and Leo W. Gerard, International Secretary-Treasurer, presented Tommy with a Certificate of Commendation in recognition for contributions above and beyond the call of duty by The United Steelworkers of America; for the exemplary role he played in the victory at Newport News Shipbuilding in "The Great Shipyard Strike of '99." (Newport News Shipbuilding Inc.), The only shipyard in the U.S. capable of building nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, and one of only two shipyards capable of building nuclear-powered submarines for the U.S. Navy.

Tommy was also preceded in death by a brother, Sammie Lee Lynn, and one sister William Sharlett Lynn.
