Jane Ann Davis Raley, 92, of Midland, died peacefully on March 7, 2016, with family at her bedside. She was born on December 8, 1923, in Walterboro, SC, the daughter of Charles Franklin Davis and Sarah Ann Gorman Davis. She spent her formative years with her paternal grandparents, Ulmer W. Davis and Emma G. Chaplin Davis, in Walterboro and on Edisto Island in the South Carolina Lowcountry, which left a deep impression on her life. Her sorrel horse, Nancy, was a dear companion in these years.

Jane attended Converse College in South Carolina and graduated from Rosemont College in Pennsylvania with a BA in English Literature. On June 7, 1947, she married Charles Francis Raley, Jr, at St. Peter's Cathedral in Wilmington, DE. They moved to Midland in 1957.

Jane belonged to Blessed Sacrament Parish and served as lector, Eucharistic minister, and as a teacher of church history and catechism classes. She was a docent at the Midland Center for the Arts, and gave talks on the Lascaux cave paintings, medieval tapestries, and illuminated manuscripts.

Jane was an imaginative and gifted cook, incorporating international dishes into her repertoire, and was a wonderful and welcoming hostess. She was also a skilled needleworker, producing many beautiful pieces of embroidery, knitting, weaving and needlepoint. She studied languages, possessed a lively interest in reading, history, and genealogy, and had a lifelong love of learning. An excellent writer, she also contributed to a book about pre-Civil War life in South Carolina by historian Theodore Rosengarten.

Jane was a longtime member of the Seed and Sod Garden Club and The Little Garden Club and was a past president of the Federated Garden Clubs of Michigan. She raised orchids and studied Ikebana, creating lovely flower arrangements for numerous exhibitions, and was certified as a flower show master judge. She had a deep and abiding love of nature, dogs, cats, horses and all God’s creatures. Her attitude toward life was exemplified by a needlepoint motto that hung in her bedroom: “Bloom Where you Are Planted.”

Jane is remembered as a woman of natural beauty and elegance, loved by her family and many friends as thoughtful, kind and unfailingly gracious. She is mourned by her husband, Charles; three children: Charles Christopher, Lelia Ellen, and Amy Jane Raley; five grandchildren: Charles (Julie), Gregory, and Peter Raley, and Emma and Henry Bedard; and two great-grandchildren: Zoe and Mia Raley. A memorial Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church in Midland, on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at 11:00AM with visitation at church one hour beforehand. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street.
