Herman H. "Babe" Gornto, 92, of Grandin died peacefully Thursday, April 8, 2004 at the Putnam Community Medical Center in Palatka.
A lifelong resident of Putnam County, he was born in Hollister and had been a resident of Grandin for the past 66 years. Before declining health, he had worked as a shipyard worker, logger, mechanic, heavy equipment operator and dredge operator. He had enjoyed carpentry and working as a handyman.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Olive Gornto and Alberta Gornto; and five brothers, Raymond Gornto, Raiford Gornton, Sidney Gornto, Theodore Gornto and Ted Gornto.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ruth Gornto, Grandin; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn and Wilbur Cumbus, Grandin; and Vicki and David Lazarchik, Roanoke, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Yolando Gornto, Kissimmee; four grandchildren, Jerald Cumbus, the United Arab Emirates; Jeffrey Gornto, Kissimmee; David Gornto, Knoxville, Tenn.; and Jennifer Damon, Los Angeles, Calif.; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10 at the Paran Cemetery in Grandin with the Rev. Robert Doran officiating. No calling hours are scheduled.
