William Lee Russell was born at home in the little town of Girard, Texas, the oldest of 6 children born to the union of Robert Lee Russell and Willie A. Harris. After Dub came five girls. During the children's growing up years, the Russell family moved several times between Texas and Oak Creek Canyon in northern Arizona whereas his mom and dad would work in the orchard for the Pendley's in Oak Creek.
At a dance in the late 1930's, along comes a good looking gal by the name of Elizabeth Dee Coats and this one really flung the love bug on ole Dub. He married Elizabeth Dee Coats on June 11, 1939 and to this union came three children, Stella Mae (Mc Clatchey), William Lee Jr. and Edna Marie (Bonhon). As Dub felt it was his responsibility to do so, he helped deliver all three of his children. Not many men can say that!
Dub was always a good provider for his family. Never was without a job. Dub's philosophy was, "It may not be the job I wanted, but if it's all I could find, I'd take it 'til a better one could be found". This is evident by the number of different jobs Dub had over the years. To name a few: school bus driver, parts route, truck driver, pest control, sheriff's deputy for Coconino County, Flagstaff, Arizona and Greenlee County, Clifton, Arizona and lastly, security guard for Phelps Dodge Copper Corporation in Morenci, Arizona for 11 years 10 months, from which Dub retired in 1981. Let's not forget, by any means, Dub was an aircraft mechanic at Kelly AFB in San Antonio and with the OSS (Office of Strategic Services, the predecessor of the CIA) in England, during WWII, plus in the navy in Boot Camp when the war ended.
In addition to being an active and respected member of the Lion's Club, and of Saint Andrews Baptist Church in Safford, Arizona, Dub was a member of Eastern Arizona Oldtime Fiddlers Association (EAOTFA) since back when it was still Cochise Oldtime Fiddlers Association. Dub started helping out at different functions even before he became a member. Definitely wasn't afraid of work. He was always there before it began and after it was over helping to do whatever needed to be done. Since becoming a member in the mid 80's, Dub had been a board member, vice president twice, and president twice of EAOTFA.
In later years, Dub became interested in raising birds and at one time he had about 80 of them. He especially liked the canaries he kept on his screened-in porch. He really enjoyed sitting out there with them early in the mornings talking to them and listening to them chirp back to him as if to answer him.
Dub and his sweetheart, Dee, celebrated their 60th anniversary on the 11th of June 1999 and her 77th birthday two days later while she was hospitalized at TMC in Tucson. It was during this time that their world fell apart as they found out she had lung cancer. On August 19, 1999, Dub's beloved wife, Dee, departed for her heavenly home.
Dub was a man with many positive traits. Number one, he was a man of his word. If he said he'd do something or would be somewhere, you could "take it to the bank". Dub was a friend. When you had Dub for a friend, you had a real friend. Dub was also a gentleman, always respectful to ladies. One thing for sure that will always be remembered about Dub was his sense of humor and his laugh. He really enjoyed a good laugh.
Dub was always a good, kind hearted person who loved people and who was loved by everyone who knew him, old and young alike.
William Lee "Dub" Russell passed peacefully at 12:05 PM on Friday the 5th of November, 1999 for his glorious reunion in Heaven.
"May God bless you in Heaven, Dub Russell, as He blessed us here on earth with you"!
