Helen Ivey Gairing (nee Nichols) was born Aug. 13, 1919, in Toledo, the only child of Louis Moon Nichols and Helen A. Hardy. She died Feb. 25, 2002 age 82 in a Wadsworth, OH nursing home, a teacher.

She married June 1950 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Wadsworth, Robert J. Gairing. He was born 1922, the son of Dan H. and Alice B. Gairing. He died Nov. 13, 1964 age 42 at St Vincent Charity Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio, a US Army veteran, resident of 625 Crestwood Ave., Wadsworth, Ohio. Robert enlisted in the US Army Sept 24, 1942 with 2 years of college.

Helen moved to Piqua, Ohio, and graduated from Piqua High School. She attended Miami University and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Education. While attending Miami University, she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

After graduating, she returned to Piqua and taught in the Piqua Public School System (1941-1942). In 1942, Helen continued her education at Western Reserve University, earning a master's degree in June 1943. Helen was nominated to the Delta Kappa Gamma Society in 1946 while teaching in the Wadsworth City School system, where she taught French, Latin, and Geography for over 30 years.

Throughout her teaching career, Mrs. Gairing organized numerous high school field trips to French-speaking Canada. In her later years, she traveled frequently to France to further her education.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Woman's Club of Wadsworth, and a volunteer for the American Red Cross.

Robert's funeral was Monday Nov 16, 1964 at Sacred Heart Church Wadsworth, Ohio. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery. Arrangements by Hilliard Funeral Home, where the Rosary will be recited Sunday p.m..
