Thomas Eugene Hicks, age 80, of Mountain City, Tennessee passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at his residence. He was born in Maybeury, West Virginia to the late James B. Hicks and Mary E. Cunningham Hicks. Gene was a member of First Christian Church. His hobbies included mowing, the outdoors, physical fitness, and gardening. He was a United States Army Veteran during which time he served multiple short tours in Korea and Vietnam. Gene was the recipient of numerous awards and commendations including the Bronze Star, one of the highest honors bestowed on military service personnel. After retiring from the Army, Gene served as the City Manager and City Judge for the town of Mountain City for several years. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Kate Hicks; son, Randy Hicks; sisters, Margaret Lee and Sandy Van Horn; and father, James R. Bowles.
Survivors include daughter, Sherry Potter and husband Darrell of Mountain City, Tennessee; son, Mike Hicks and wife Dee of Idaho Falls, Idaho; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Hicks; three sisters, Connie Grizzle and Sandy Chafin, both of Lebanon and Etta Morrison of California; brother, Jimmy Bowles of Mechanicsville, Virginia; four grandchildren, Adam Cornett, Jared Hicks, Abby Hicks and Olivia Hicks and one great grandchild, Wyatt Lemons.
Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, April 24, 2016 at 3:30 p.m. from the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of Hux-Lipford Funeral Home. Graveside service with military honors accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard were conducted on Monday, April 25, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. from the Mountain Home VA National Cemetery. The family received friends on Sunday from 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel prior to the funeral service.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Jim Shine and his nurse Kathleen, Dr. Ahmed Khan and Dr. Reddy. Thank you as well to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Johnson County Community Hospital who went above and beyond in the care of Mr. Hicks.
At other times the family will receive friends at 268 Sunset Drive, Mountain City.
